Storybook Review!

Bless This Mouse by Lois Lowry

Release date : March 21, 2011

Product Description

A resilient and quirky colony of church mice fears another Great X more than they fear cats. Under Mouse Mistress Hildegarde’s leadership, they save themselves from one danger after another—sometimes just by the skin of their tails! Can one ultimate act of bravery during the feast day of St. Francis get Father Murphy to bless these mice and keep them safe forever?  Rife with humor and personality, this young middle-grade novel has an old-fashioned feel with the makings of a modern classic.

My Review:
Lois Lowry is one of the world's most beloved children's authors.  Her books have sold millions across the globe.  Numerous awards have been bestowed upon this amazing author, and rightly so.  Lois Lowry has gift of storytelling and readers of the world are forever grateful. Her novel, Number the Stars, is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful books I have ever read. But like a talented author should, Ms. Lowry is able to get a little silly now and then as well.  Her Gooney Bird series is a fun and light favorite amongst the 6-9 year old set.

Being such a fan of her previous works, I was very anxious to read her new creation, Bless This Mouse.  The cover artwork alone almost killed me with it's cuteness.  I was hoping her new story could live up to such undeniable adorable-ness! Let me tell you this.. Lois Lowry does not disappoint.  Bless This Mouse is so incredibly sweet that it almost gave me a cavity.

That being said, the story is not all fluff. This is not one of those books you will read to your child once and forget about. Bless This Mouse has a lesson to teach.  I can guarantee it will get you and your children started in a discussion about kindness and forgiveness.  This book has all the right elements for a perfect nightly story time : adorable illustrations, cute characters, humor and most of all, and important lesson to be learned. Bless This Mouse is destined to be a classic.

*Although I have this book listed as a "storybook" selection, the actual recommended reading age is 9-11. Of course, independent readers would ADORE this book. My own 8 year old loved it. However, this book is a fantastic read aloud story that could be shared with younger children as well.

Publishes 4/11/2010

Publisher's Description:
"Ponytails and braids! Ponytails and braids! I don't see anything but ponytails and braids! This class needs some fashion. This class needs some fun. I'll find a hairdo to impress everyone." Annabelle doesn't want the same boring hairstyle that all the other girls have. When she spies a picture of her grandma, she has the perfect idea: a big bouffant! But how can she make her style stand up? And will her classmates really be impressed with her daring 'do?

My Review:

Big Bouffant is a perfect storybook for all those little fashion divas out there!  Annabelle yearns to stand out in a see of ponytails and braids. She wants to be different and stylish.  And when she spies a photo of her grandmother's bouffant hairstyle, a new hairstyle craze is let loose on her elementary school!

I thought this book was just so cute and sweet! The prose is fun and light. The illustrations are beautiful and unique.  I loved every aspect of this book! Can't wait to read it to a few little fashion princesses that I know!

Our Last Magical Christmas?

So, I'm back. I could go into a long rambling post about what I've been doing and where I've been. Or I could just skip past all that and pretend it never happened. And well, I'm an avoider at heart, so I'm just gonna go with door number two, Monty. (yep, that was a Let's Make a Deal reference. I'm nothing if not contemporary.)

We are in the midst of preparing for quite possibly our last magical Christmas. Roslyn is in second grade now and there are rumors circulating amongst the 7 year old set that Santa does not exist. Crazy, right? Roslyn is teetering on the edge of still believing in the man in the red suit and about to fall into the abyss of heresy. (the parents?? how can they do all that in ONE night?). I am utterly heartbroken. At the moment, she is still trying to blindly accept that Santa delivers gifts to every child in the world in one wonderful 24 hour period. I can also see her waging her bets on the idea that it could quite possibly just be mom and dad. I have noticed quite a few chores being done without asking in the past week. She also asked me if she should make me a copy of her letter to Santa before she puts it in the mailbox. When I asked why, she said, "Oh, I don't know.. in case you wanna scrapbook it?".

The only thing we've got going for us right now, is that fact that Roslyn thinks we are dead broke. I've told her so many times that something is too expensive, that she just assumes we are on the cusp of poverty. Here is an example: she asked "Santa" for an ipod. When I asked what she wants from mom and dad, she said "Well, I know money is hard to get... so maybe a ball?" A BALL?? Really kid, I appreciate it, but we are not that hard up. Although, now that I think about it, maybe it's a good thing she thinks that way. If she knew we saved all year for Christmas, she may start making lists in February.

And before you all start lecturing me on the fact that the holiday is not about Santa, I know that. And I have definitely instilled the importance of giving into my sweet girl. We go shopping for Toys For Tots every year, we fill gift stockings and we give to the animal shelter. She knows that the holiday season is more than a fat man flying through the sky in a sled with a bag of gifts for brats across the globe. But, it is so fun when you child still believes, isn't it? I am going to miss the letters to Santa, the mall visits to sit on his lap and searching the night sky for Rudolph's red nose. Will it still feel like Christmas without decorating cookies for Christmas Eve and spreading little bits of carrot and apple across the front porch ?(those reindeer make a mess when they eat!). Is this the last year that I will get to tuck her in on the 24th and whisper that if she hears bells or hooves on the roof, to hurry up and fall asleep? Christmas will lose a little bit of it's magic, I'm afraid..

And now that I think about it, you know else will lose it's power? How am I going to "threaten to call Santa" when she's bad? I have a feeling that next year when I pretend to pull Santa's phone number out of my purse and dial frantically on my cell, she's gonna call my bluff. I think my Christmas just lost a little bit of it's magic, too.

Ps. Santa if you're really out there, could you throw a few Zhu Zhu pets under the tree??

Random Post Redux #4

It's a lazy weekend... so play along and recycle an older post from your blog. Great way to get a post in and introduce some newer readers to some of your older stuff...

FOR THE LOVE OF CHICKENS.

My daughter Roslyn has always loved animals. She also has a flair for the dramatic. One day when she was four and half years old we saw what happens when these two traits collide.

It was a rainy November afternoon. Ros was watching tv and enjoying some lunch, when a commercial about "cooking your Thanksgiving turkey" came on the screen. She giggled a little and said, "That's so funny that they call it turkey. People don't eat real turkeys."

I laughed too. "Of course they do! People eat animals all the time."

She shrugged a little. "Well, I'm glad we don't, mommy. We would never eat an animal."

I watch as she dips her CHICKEN nugget into some sauce and gobbles away. Crap. Do I tell her? I mean she's almost 5. It's time she knew the truth. I take a deep breath and say, "Um, honey. We do eat animals. You're eating chicken nuggets. They are made out of chickens."

She drops the nugget. Clunk. "What?" She stares at her plate. Her mouth is hanging open. Big tears are starting to form and I think, "Shit.. here we go." She jumps up and does the drama queen run to her bedroom. (you know the one.. arms flailing, legs stomping, but the nose is still way up in the air.) "How could you make me eat poor little chickens?!". She slams her door.

I consider for a moment going in there. But decide to let her have some time. Good thing, because a second later she opens the door. She gives me the death stare to end all death stares and marches past me to her toy boxes in the front room. She digs around like crazy, finds what she is looking for and marches back to her room, wailing in agony the whole time. This time she forgets to dramatically slam the door and leaves it open a little. I can see that the thing she had been searching for was her stuffed turkey. (I am seriously trying not laugh at this point. I mean, come on...) She then dives under her blankets with her stuffed turkey. I can hear her mumbling something in between sobs. I sneak a little closer.

"I'm so sorry that I have been eating you guys. I didn't know. She didn't tell me." Again, more wailing and then, " I know.. I think she's a mean lady, too."

Oh for the love of God. Again, I decide to let her ride it out a little. About ten minutes later she comes out of the bedroom. I am thinking it's over. She drops to the ground in front of our dogs. "I am sorry. I didn't want to eat your friends!" The dogs are wide eyed in terror. What's with this kid?

I laugh a little. "Honey, we don't eat dogs."

She buries her face in the dog's side. "Well, what do you think Hot Dogs are then, huh??" The wailing continues.

Finally I get her calmed down. I explain to her how some animals eat other animals. I tell her that if she doesn't want to, she doesn't have to. Some people are vegetarians. And at this point I am thinking she definitly will become one. I would be more than happy to support that.

"What do they eat?" she asked, her face so filled with hope.

"Well, they eat vegtables." I tell her.

Her face falls and her nose immediatly wrinkles up."But I don't like vegtables." she says.

She looks at me for a few seconds and then glances at the nuggets still sitting on her plate. I can almost hear the wheels in her little head spinning. Suddenly, as if someone has flicked a switch, she says. "Nah. I'm just gonna eat the chickens."
It's over.

And..... end scene.

The Six Principles of Embarrassing Your Kid...

So, the other week we were at an event for my daughter's karate school. All of the students were lined up on the grass, awaiting their turn to test in front of the judges. My husband and I had pulled up lawn chairs to the edge of the area, and as usual, got ourselves into a really silly mood. Just like the kids in the back of the class in high school, Craig and I like to sit on the outskirts of situations and make fun of those that are participating. (you see.. because we are way too cool to join in on anything...) So the instructor is talking to the kids and asking them questions.

He says something like..."ok, kids. What are the six symbols on our flag? Can you tell me what they mean?"

Silence. The kids just stare at him.

I whisper to Craig. "Do you know?"

He starts to tick words off on his fingers, with a completely straight face.
"Discipline, Strength, Kickin' Ass, Taking Names, Cigarettes and Cake."

I, of course, snort like a pig and burst into laughter. And then continue laughing until I choke and start hacking like a 70 year old smoker with emphysema. All of the children turn in my direction and wonder who's crazy ass mother I am. Roslyn, of course, did not even turn around. But I did see her sigh and shake her head.

Poor kid. It's only gonna get worse from here.

Love Notes From A Seven Year Old...

Yesterday, when I got home from the store, Roslyn had 2 loves notes waiting for us. One for Craig and one for me. Both were very sweet. One was hilarious...

Here is mine:

It reads:
Dear Mom,
You are the best mom I ever heard of and even sometimes you are very funny but the best thing you can do is be my mom. Love Roslyn. (And then there is a portrait of me.. lookin' quite spiffy I might add.)

And then Craig handed me his to read.

His read:
Dear Dad, you are the best dad in the world. Even you know that sometimes you can get grumpy but you are my dad and that's the best thing you can do. Love, Roslyn.
(and then there is a pic of craig, complete with a shirt that reads "Life Stinks.")

God, I love this kid.

A meme.. 'cause I've got nothing today..

1. What is your current obsession?
I have a very obsessive personality, so there are usually a few going on.. right now, it's online scrabble, books about the civil rights movement, and shopping online for spring clothes.

2. What’s a good coffee place?
My kitchen! Actually I hate to say it, but I love Starbucks. (I know, they are taking over the world.) But, if I see an independent coffee shop, I ALWAYS stop.

3. Who was the last person that you hugged?
My pug, Dexter

4. Do you nap a lot?
Oh God, I adore napping. Every weekend I have my Sunday nap and it freaking ROCKS!

5. Tonight, what’s for dinner?
Crap, I don't know.. am I suppossed to plan that stuff out ahead of time??

6. What was the last thing that you bought?
People Style Magazine and a pack of Reese Peices, cause I spend my money wisely.

7. What is your favorite weather?
I love a nice snowy day. I love it when we are "snowed in" and can't go anywhere!

8. Tell us something about one blogger who you think will play this week?
I have no idea who will play along.. but those who don't will suffer long and painful torture. (you will be forced to watch reruns of Macgyver)

9. If you were given a free house that was fully furnished, where in the world would you like it to be?
Um, where I live. Duh.

10. Name three things that you could not live without.
My family, my pug, and candy.

11. What would you like in your hands right now?
Oh, I know what you want me to say, and I'm not going to say it. You filthy perverts.

12. What’s one of your guilty pleasures?
Rocking out to 80's songs with hubby in the car. We do some awesome choreography and there is a lot of "pass the mike" going on.

13. What would you change or eliminate about yourself?
I am a hypochodriac... big time.
Here is a link to emphasize that fact.

14. As a child, what type of career did you want?
I always dreamed of being a writer. I used to write stories for my parents and then for my friends as I got older. For awhile, in High School, I gave up the dream and decided to be a preschool teacher. But then I learned that I hate kids. Ok, wait. That sounded bad. I hate ugly, bratty kids. There that sounds better.

15. What are you missing right now?
Ambition.. I seem to have none lately.

16. What are you currently reading?
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton, A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

17. What do you fear the most?
That one day my daughter's stuffed animal collection will come to life and kill us all in a bloody massacre. Well that, and spiders.

18. What’s the best movie that you’ve seen recently?
Hmm... it's a tie between Edward Penishands and Breast Side Story. Both cinematic masterpieces, the acting superb. Although I must say, the camera work during the love scenes was very intense.

19. What’s your favorite book from the past year?
Um... don't ask me that... that's too hard. Fine, if I have to choose, this one.

20. Is there a comfort food from your childhood that you still enjoy?
Um, yes... all comfort foods. But especially the fatty, cheesy, greasy ones.

Hot Seat Question #3

Welcome to the Hot Seat! Each week, I give you a situation to ponder. Some will be silly (this is me, afterall). Some will be serious. Some will be though-provoking (but not many... I mean come on. You know I can only go so deep). I am going to give you several possible responses and you can choose one, or of course, leave your own. It's just a fun little social experiment and a way for us all to get to know each other.

Now, here is your third scenario:

You and your 13 year old daughter are attending the high school football game. You notice a large group of girls harrassing another girl in the stands. They are calling her names, pushing her and pulling her hair. The abused girl is just hanging her head in shame. You want to say something. Your daughter begs you not to. She says the mean girls will just turn their attention on her from now on. You want to step in and help the poor girl, but how can you throw your own child into the line of fire?

What do you do?

a. Stand up, cup your hands around your mouth and scream, "Hey you little witches! Leave that girl alone and go back to lookin' skanky over by the boy's locker room where you belong."

b. Look around you and ask that someone else steps in . It's not your problem, but you do feel for the girl. You're not about to make your child a target. Maybe someone else will do it for you.

c. Approach the young girl being tormented and ask if she wants to sit with you and your daughter. Mean girls be damned.. you will teach your child to be compassionate.

d. Everyone gets picked on some time in their lives. It's a rite of passage. It will toughen the girl up in the long run.

Also, check out HOT SEAT QUESTION#1 AND QUESTION #2

Hot Seat Question #2 Results..

Many of you have emailed me to see if I would post the results of this week's hot seat question..so, I'm giving them to you from now on!

Here is this past week's question..
Hot Seat Question #2

Some people gave their own response.. which I enjoy very much. Most gave their choices and explained why they would respond that way.

14 people said they would do A. - nothing.
10 people chose B
4 people chose c

I went with everyone's first response in tallying the votes.

Hot Seat Question, Episode #2

Welcome to the Hot Seat! Each week, I give you a situation to ponder. Some will be silly (this is me, afterall). Some will be serious. Some will be though-provoking (but not many... I mean come on. You know I can only go so deep). I am going to give you several possible responses and you can choose one, or of course, leave your own. It's just a fun little social experiment and a way for us all to get to know each other.

Here is your second scenario:

You are in the parking lot of Toys-r-us. You see (and hear) a woman leaving the store. She has a child, around three years old, with her. The child is screaming bloody murder, dragging her feet and yelling "NO! NO!" The woman looks stressed. You assume the child is just having a temper tantrum. But then, a thought crosses your mind. What if you are witnessing an abduction? Do you risk possible embarrasment and anger and approach the woman? Or is it just another spoiled kid showing his temper?
What do you do?

a. Nothing. It's a Toys-r-us for God's sake. Every child comes out of there kicking and screaming.
b. Approach the woman and ask her if she needs help... and face a possible angry mother.
c. Ask the child, "Is this your momma? are you giving her a hard time?"
d. Call the police and give them the license plate number... better safe than sorry.

Leave your answer in the comments section and feel free to elaborate.

She makes it all worthwhile.....

This is what my baby girl gave me the other day.....

She used her scrapbook kit from Christmas. It says ..(or is suppossed to say...) "Thank you for taking care of me. You are the best."
Totally unprompted, out of the goodness of her sweet little heart. Days like this make me think I'm doing things right.

Here's where I get complicated..

I am all kinds of pissed off tonight.. and really what better way to get back to blogging, than with a rant?

I don't even know who I am more mad at, me or my husband. Here's the story: Ros has been sick since last Wednesday. Longer than that actually. For a week before that she was sleeping like 4 hours a night due to her allergies and post nasal drip. So of course, who stays up with her? Me. Fine, I get that. I work from home, I set my own hours. He needs his sleep. Whatever.. But last time I checked, I do too. The doc put her on antibiotics last Wednesday. It was such a strong dosage.. she got sick. I mean, diarrhea sick.. it was awful. It was pouring out of the kid. We went through a twenty pack of underwear in a day. Every time she coughed she leaked. She crapped herself in her sleep. It was awful. So Friday night, I was up with her all night. Does husband get up? No. What does he do Saturday morning? Goes for a four hour bike ride. I let it go, it was his birthday. Saturday night she is puking her brains out and crapping her pants all night. Does he get up and help me? No. He swears he doesn't hear her..but really he has to. I am in and out of the bedroom getting underwear all night. (her dresser is in our room). She continues to be sick until yesterday when she spikes a fever and she goes to the ER. When we get home and the kid is freaking comatose on the couch with fever, shivering, what does he do? He spends the evening getting his bike ready for today's ride. Are you effing kidding me?? God dammit...

Now, here is the problem. I am sure you are all thinking right now.. "what a jerk. I would kill him." But its not that simple. Because he asked me if he should go. And what do I say? I say "whatever. It looks like you're getting ready to go anyway." and "I'm not gonna be the mean guy and say no." I never say "please stay. I need help". But I also don't say, "yeah, you should go." You know why? Because I want him to want to help. (I sound like Jennifer Anniston in The Break-up) But it's true. I want him to think, "Wow. Kel's had a rough time with all this lately. She looks exhausted. Maybe she's gettin' sick of cleaning puke and scrubbing poo out of underwear." I want him to love me enough to want to make it better for me. I want him to think that I am good mom and I am killing myself with worry and I need a break. I don't want to have to tell him to feel that way. I want him to just feel it. I want him to consider that maybe Roslyn would love for her dad to spontaneously grab a book off the shelf and read to her to give a me rest.

But again, I'm mad at myself because this is the way it's always been. I always keep my mouth shut about it, and seethe over things. He's not a mind reader. And maybe I seem like I don't need help.

Now I am gonna regret this post in the morning. Because my husband is not a jerk. He is a caring father and husband. I love him with all my heart. But right now, I am just feeling a little neglected. Right now, I am upset. Right now, I am beyond exhausted. And right now, I am really wishing that he could just read my mind and know that I don't always say what I mean. That sometimes I just want him to want to help, whether I let him or not. Which I probably wont, because I don't want him to be tired for work and I don't want him to get sick.

Hey, I never said I wasn't complicated.

'Cause Nothing Says Friendship Like Branding.....

Some of you will remember me talking about Roslyn and her best friend, Dorothy. They have been best friends pretty much from birth. Dorothy's mom is my best friend, we met in Kindergarten, so they didn't have much choice in this area. They were born two months apart and are as close as sisters.

Last night we had Dorothy over for a sleepover. The girls get so goofy together. They were taking a bath. We had the bathroom door open and just let them play. We heard so much laughing we had to peek in. Do you know what those girls were doing? They were writing their intials on each other's buttchecks with soap paint. Each of their little butts had " D + R BFF".

Why do I have a feeling these two are going to try to sneak off to the tattoo parlor in a few years?

Son of A................

First of all.. thank you all so much for your concern over Roslyn. She seems to be improving alot. I took her to the doc yesterday for a follow up visit and she has a double ear infection! The doc put her on Augmenten and already she is perking up! But guess who isn't? Yes, mothers across the world know what happens when you spend 5 nights in a row, worrying over your child, catching vomit in you hands, wiping snotty noses and pleading with your child to take yucky medicine. How are you rewarded for your hard work?? Say it with me, Mommies...."YOU GET SICK!" (as a damn dog to be precise)

Ah, good times. Anyhoo.. I'm sure I'll live. I'm just glad my little lady is feeling better for Santa. That's all I wanted to get for Christmas anyway.... well, that and an ipod.

Anyway, thank you to all my wonderful bloggy friends! I am so happy to have gotten to know you all in these past few months! Hope you all have a great holiday season!

Monday, December 15, 2008

ok, experienced mommies.. I need advice..

I would like to know what you consider to be a fever with your child? Is anything over 99 a fever? Or 100?

I always freak when Ros has a fever. It freaks me out. She has a sore throat now and her temp is 99.5 is that even considered a fever? She's acting fine. The only reason I took her temp is beause she said she was hot and her throat was a little sore. I know if I call the doc, they will say bring her in. They will then throw amoxycillin at me and throw me out. But I don't want her on anitbiotics if it's a virus. They always give us antibiotics. My gut tells me to give a few days, and see if it gets worse.. what do you think? what would you do?

and yes, I am a worrisome mom. That's why I have one kid, I couldn't handle the worry of two!!

ps. what's considered a fever in an adult? just curious...

Thousand Words Thursday

This is Roslyn.. chilling in the front room toyboxes. She collects stuffed animals. Can you tell?
